Considered one of Disney’s most impressive resorts if not the most impressive, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is a deluxe and luxurious hotel that nearly anyone would be pleased to have their event at. Having done many events in the Grand Floridian Ballroom, we can attest to the fact that it is an incredible venue and ballroom to host your event.

Facts about Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

In the 19th and early 20th century, there were many Victorian-style seaside resorts built on the coast of Florida. Disney’s Grand Floridian was inspired by this particular look. The hotel opened on Jun 28, 1988—32 years ago. Since then, the resort’s theme has aged beautifully with many people becoming enamored by the sheer opulence of the property. It is completely in line with what Disney offers, a fairytale event that you’ll remember for years to come.

That fairytale is having an event such as a wedding or reception that could satisfy all of your dreams of being a late 19th-century aristocrat. This is the type of venue at which you’d like to arrive in a horse and buggy!

The Grand Floridian Ballroom is enormous! Even with a fully packed event such as your typical wedding or party, it is hard to believe that you could make use of all 18,216 Sq. Ft. of space. This is likely why the ballroom can and often is divided up into 9 sections that still can accommodate up to 300 guests.

Pastel colors, striped wallpapers, ornate designs of brass as well as a great many glittering chandeliers are features of this seaside resort.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Ballroom Event Lighting

Naturally, lighting needs depend on what type of event you’d like to throw as well as what you desire thematically. With this venue, in particular, the entire resort is stylized so well that it’s hard not to want to follow that same level of elegance within the ballroom.

Lighting considerations for this venue are all preference. While many do opt for a classical look, this photo demonstrates how colored uplighting can really create a fantastical experience.

That being said, soft, yellow lighting does pair well with this Victorian themed resort. The first working lightbulb wasn’t invented by Edison until 1879 or so. Victorian lighting was dominated by oil lamps and light fixtures such as chandeliers and sconces (the wall fixtures that held candles and torches, etc).

A great example of this kind of softer lighting scheme would be this photo below, which was taken from an event in the Grand Floridian Ballroom.

Soft uplighting is used to give the room some basic illumination around the borders. The small chandeliers lit around the room help draw your eyes to the ceilings textured pattern and the pastel drapery that hangs. Flowers accompany the small candles lit at every table which contributes to the Victorian setting.

In this photo, the chandelier provides some much needed overhead lighting while still keeping the room dim. Sharp-eyed Disney fans might notice a similarity between the chandelier design here and the one from the famous ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast.

A spotlight on the main table helps keep the focus of the room on the emcee or VIP of the event such as the bride and groom. Lighting is not a static thing but something that should be adjusted depending on what part of the event is going on.
